Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), situated at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.

IIST, established in 2007, functions as an autonomous institution under the Department of Space (DoS), Government of India.

IIST was conceived with a vision to nurture exceptional manpower for the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), one of world's leading scientific organizations engaged in space research and space applications.

Courses Offered:

Undergraduate Programmes:

  • B. Tech in Aerospace Engineering
  • B. Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (Avionics)

Dual Degree (B. Tech in Engineering Physics + Master of Science/ M. Tech in one of the following:

  • Master of Science in Astronomy and Astrophysics
  • Master of Science in Solid State Physics
  • M. Tech in Earth System Science
  • M. Tech in Optical Engineering

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates desirous of admission to IIST must satisfy ALL eligibility criteria detailed below:

  • Citizenship: Only Indian citizens are eligible to apply for admission in IIST.
  • Date of Birth: Candidates belonging to General, EWS and OBC - NCL categories must have been born on or after October 1, 1994. Candidates belonging to SC/ ST and PD categories must have born on or after October 1, 1989.
    The date of birth as recorded in the certificate of high school/ first Board/ or its equivalent will be accepted. If the certificate does not mention the date of birth, candidate must, at the time of accepting the seat, submit an authenticated document from a competent authority indicating the same.
  • Minimum Marks Requirement in Qualifying Examination: Candidates must have secured at least 75% aggregate marks in the Class XII (or equivalent - see below for list of Qualifying Examinations) Board examination. The aggregate marks for SC, ST and PD candidates should be at least 65%. The marks scored in the following five subjects will be considered for calculating the aggregate marks:
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Mathematics
    • A language (if the candidate has taken more than one language, then the language with the higher marks will be considered).
    • Any subject other than the above four (the subject with the highest marks will be considered).
  • Minimum Marks Requirement in JEE (Advanced) - 2019 Examination:
  • Candidates should have appeared for the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) - 2019 conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA), to qualify themselves to appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) - 2019 conducted by IITs and secure the minimum prescribed marks as given below:

    SC/ ST/ PD At least 10% marks in aggregate and at least 2.5% marks in each of the three subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics)

List of Qualifying Examinations:

Any one of the following will be accepted as the Qualifying Examination

  • The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized central/ State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; etc.
  • Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
  • Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy.
  • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
  • Any Public School/ Board/ University examination in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • H.S.C. vocational examination.
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/ Cambridge/ Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
  • High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

In case the relevant Qualifying Examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level.

EWS Candidates: Eligible candidates applying under EWS category are required to produce a EWS certificate issued by a competent authority. Certificates in any other format will not be accepted. The certificate (in original) must be produced at the time of verification at the specified Reporting Centres, failing which the candidature will not be considered for admission under the EWS category.

Candidates are required to submit the following documents at the time of joining IIST:

  • ADMIT CARD issued by the Reporting Centre or SEAT ALLOTMENT LETTER for candidates who accept the seat allotment in Rounds 13 and 14.
  • Self-attested copies of Class X/ Class XII Mark sheet/ Certificates.
  • Category (SC/ ST/ OBC - NCL/ PD/ EWS) certificates.
  • Transfer Certificate from the institute last attended.
  • Caution-deposit of INR 13000 (see Section 5) to be paid in the form of Demand Draft (from any nationalized bank) drawn in favour of Registrar, IIST, payable at Thiruvananthapuram.
  • Medical Examination Report in the prescribed format given in APPENDIX-VI.
  • Three copies of recent passport size (3.5 x 4.5 cm) colour photographs.
  • A copy of student's AADHAR Card.
